VANIA LAWSON

CONTEMPORARY Australian Artist

Vania is a Perth based, Australian artist with a background in design and scenic art.

She is drawn to landscapes with distinct light and texture, the movement of all weather conditions and how that plays on our surroundings. Her works are emotional and psychological places, beautiful internal landscapes of her surrounds. "My work speaks of things that are timeless, I feel that for most of us our oceans, skies and landscapes represents something that is comforting and timeless."

Creating layers then destroying areas as she build the work up creates a cyclical process, much like the timeless crash of ocean tides against the shore, this also adds an additional level of texture to her work.

Vania's style of artwork encompasses different medias, some comprising of texture and strong opacity, others with delicate gilt leaf + translucent overlays of oil washes. Shadows, glimpses and echos of the past and of surrounding landscapes are featuring predominately in a new series of artworks. Each of these artworks consist of multiple layers in oils often building up washes of colour in a cyclical process to produce the final image.

Her current series of work explores our relationship to a sense of place, revealing an interest in how it is perceived and remembered through tone and hue. It renders the ordinary, the overlooked, the neglected and sometimes forgotten beauty within our world of images that surround us each day.

Vania is an award winning artist and has been exhibiting for over 3 decades, her work is represented both nationally and internationally in numerous institutional, corporate and private collections.
